what NOT to pack when going on a road trip

Whether you’re travelling in a brand new camper trailer or hybrid camper, over-packing has the potential to squander your experience. With over 15 years in the business, here at Austrack Campers, we have witnessed many instances of over-packing and are here to tell you to avoid it! Here are some things NOT to bring when planning a camping road trip.

Clothes, clothes, and more clothes!

As much as we hate to say it, there’s no need for that fluorescent shirt or those ten pairs of shoes. It’s important to be realistic and rational when it comes to packing clothes. Pack neutral tones that can easily match any attire, or coordinate your outfits pre-adventure to ensure you’re not taking extra. If the worst-case scenario happens, you can always wash your clothes in the sink and hang them out to dry like a true camper!

Kitchen utensils and toiletries

When it comes to kitchenware, basic items are more than enough. You will need nothing more than a medium-sized boiling pan and a saucepan. Let’s face it, a camper is not where you’re going to develop your culinary skills, so it’s best to leave that slow cooker and waffle machine at home for another time. The same goes for toiletries: your toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner and deodorant are more than enough to keep you feeling fresh on the go.

Camping specifics

This element of over-packing is often overlooked, especially by new campers who are anxious to ensure a smooth and unproblematic journey. Fuel, firewood, lighter fluid and bug spray, whilst being essential, do not need to be stocked in full. As first-time campers, you are likely to stick to camp sites and destinations that have stores or at least fuel stations en route. Save on space and take specifics, but within reason.
