LARA WETLANDS

A real outback experience destination is Lara Wetlands, located just south of Barcaldine, in the heart of Central West Queensland. This working cattle property is a 15,000 acre station stay where campers delight in spending time around the unpowered wetlands, home to over 100 species of birdlife. This unique habitat is shallow water, fed by a century old artesian bore.

Sunrise and Sunset

At these magical times of the day, grab your camera and get creative with the shadows and reflections of the dead ghost gums which provide perches for the birds, and interesting composition for amazing photos. Sit around the wetlands with plenty of space between campers and watch as the sun sinks of an afternoon, burning bright on the horizon and lighting up the wetlands. Morning hues of pink and blue will leave a lasting impression, as the gentle light of morning slowly illuminates the land.

Thermal Pool

This property is great for all travellers, including the kids. The natural artesian thermal pool is set to flow in at 42 degrees, and slightly cooler in the middle (tip: make sure you keep well hydrated in the hot water). Pets are quite welcome on-leash at all times, and for the human kids there is a playground, canoes and kids bikes to help keep them amused and active.

Campsites

Choose your own idyllic campsite from many areas around the wetlands, right on the water, or a bit farther back under shady native trees. Fires are allowed in designated removable drums, bring in your wood or buy it from the office – no collecting is allowed from the paddocks of box and sandalwood trees.

Star Gazing

Make sure to look up up up and see how the night sky and stars go on forever, as there are no towns or road lights to impede the clear view. Picture yourselves sitting around a warm campfire, the sky of constellations above, drink in hand and some stories waiting to be told.

Lara Homestead

Purchase a guided tour to see the old 1912 Homestead, six bedroom, semi-renovated with huge verandas. Enjoy country hospitality with a Devonshire Tea experience as your guide regales his company with tales of the past.
