McHitch Drop-On & Automatic Coupler USER MANUAL

Your McHitch coupler is a critical connection between your tow vehicle and trailer. Designed around McHitch’s proven universal-joint articulation system, both the Drop-On and Automatic Coupler provide a secure towing connection while allowing the vehicle and trailer to move independently across rough terrain, steep inclines, corrugations, and off-camber tracks. When correctly installed and maintained, McHitch couplers provide up to 90° of articulation in all directions for improved off-road performance and reduced stress on towing components.

Understanding Your Coupler
The McHitch range includes two coupling styles:

Drop-On Coupler

• Connects vertically onto a vehicle-mounted tow pin.
• Secured using a rotating locking head and secondary locking pin.
• Simple, robust design with minimal moving parts.

Automatic Coupler

• Uses a receiver and tapered engagement shaft.
• Automatically locks as the tow vehicle reverses into position.
• Secured with a secondary locking pin and retaining clip.

Both systems share the same articulation assembly, main shaft, nylon bushes, and secondary safety locking system.

Before Every Trip

A quick pre-tow inspection helps ensure safe operation:

• Confirm the coupler is fully engaged and locked.
• Check locking pins and retaining clips are correctly fitted.
• Inspect safety chains and shackles.
• Confirm electrical and breakaway connections are secure.
• Check for signs of damage, excessive wear, corrosion, or loose hardware.
• Ensure the coupler articulates freely without binding.

Towing and Operation

McHitch couplers are designed for both highway and off-road use. During operation:

• Drive to the conditions.
• Reduce speed on corrugated or rough surfaces.
• Inspect the coupling after severe off-road use or impacts.
• Be aware of jack-knife angles when reversing or manoeuvring in tight spaces.
• Always maintain adequate clearance between the vehicle, trailer, drawbar, and associated towing equipment.

Inspection and Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential for reliable towing performance.

Before Every Trip

• Check coupler condition, locking components, articulation, and safety equipment.

Monthly or Every 1,000km

• Clean the coupling.
• Inspect the universal joint, main shaft, nylon bushes, tow pin or receiver.
• Check for excessive movement, wear, or corrosion.

After Off-Road, Beach, or Water Exposure

• Remove mud, sand, and debris.
• Rinse with fresh water where required.
• Dry thoroughly and inspect all moving components.
• Lubricate service points as required.

Common Signs Service Is Required

Inspect the coupler immediately if you notice:

• Excessive rattling or clunking.
• Increased movement in the coupling.
• Difficulty hitching or unhitching.
• Binding during articulation.
• Visible wear, damage, or corrosion.
• Difficulty inserting locking pins.
