A short guide to Woods Point

The Aberfeldy Track

Woods Point is a tiny town nestled in Victoria’s Great Dividing Range, rich in the state’s gold-mining history and home to one of the most beautiful and exciting 4WD tracks in the area.

Here we’ll give you a brief look into why you may want to head to Woods Point for your next off-road holiday.

History of Woods Point

Woods Point started as a general store in the mid-1800s, built to serve miners prospecting the recently discovered Morning Star mine. Today it’s a hot spot for trail bikers, four-wheel-drive enthusiasts, bushwalkers and equestrians.

Camping in Woods Point

As you would expect, there are many camping spots servicing visitors to Woods Point. Perhaps the two most popular are the JH Scott Reserve and Comet Flat.

Both sites are pet friendly, with fishing and swimming available at Comet Flat. You will have to arrive adequately prepared and equipped for your stay. There are wood barbecues and fire pits available, but you will need to bring your own wood.

It may be wise to supply your own drinking water as well as non-potable water may be the only available. Also, keep in mind that the roads are not sealed, making it wise to access the properties via a 4×4.

Activities to do in Woods Point

Many spots in Woods Point will allow you to access the Goulburn River for swimming and fishing. There is also a mini-golf course and tennis courts in the town.

The Aberfeldy Track

The Aberfeldy Track is a historic touring route that was once the path for horse-drawn carts during the gold rush.

The Aberfeldy Track ranks among one of Victoria’s best 4WD experiences. The route is accessible from Woods Point and passes through some of the lushest landscapes in the state.

Visitors are rewarded by gorgeous mountain top views and stunning river crossings along the way.

Historic sites are well marked, allowing tourists to learn more about iconic locations like the Toombon mines and Red Jacket Cemetery.

The winding dirt roads of Woods Point offer not only an excellent opportunity to travel back in time to the days of homesteaders and prospectors but also an opportunity to create stories of your own with your family.
