Camping at Windjana Gorge National Park

windjana gorge national park

Windjana Gorge National Park is the place to go if you are ready for some fun in the wilderness that hasn’t been defined yet. This is a gorgeous place where you can really take in the beauty of the vegetation. You will see colorful plants and flowers that you may not have seen before. Plus, there is spectacular wildlife that you will be able to observe in its natural habitat. Being able to understand the balance of nature including plants and animals has never been possible like it is here. You will get a new appreciation of your role in all of it. Too often humans fail to realise that they are part of something bigger.

The fact that many areas are high on cliffs gives you a panoramic view of Windjana Gorge National Park that you don’t want to miss. Some of these areas are about 100 meters above the floodplain. You will want to spend time just taking it all in. Some areas look like paintings and not real.

The images are awesome so make sure you take along your video recorder or your camera. You will want to capture as much of it as you can. Yet nothing will compare to the beauty if seeing it first hand at Windjana Gorge National Park. If you are tired of the busy city then this can be an inviting escape from all of it. Just pack your camper trailer and head out- you won’t regret anything about the trip but having to head home again when it’s over!

There are swimming areas, but they are more like watering holes. If you want the rugged outdoor experience it doesn’t get any better than that. There are gorges that have been carved out over millions of years and you will be right in the heart of them. Be ready for a delightful hike through Napier Range.

That is about 3 ½ kilometers and it winds all through the gorge. Along the way pay attention to the fossilized areas of the gorge walls. They have many stories to tell that span over time. You will see plenty of great wildlife too including birds, fruit bats, and even crocodiles!

While Windjana Gorge National Park has something remarkable to offer all year long, the best time is from May to September. This location is about 2 hours from Derby and it is well worth the drive. This is one of the lesser known camping locations in Australia. Yet that also means there are fewer people so you can navigate it without too many interruptions.
