The “Scout” is another first for our team at Austrack Campers.
For some time now we had realised that the camper trailer market is based on very large tents fitted to heavy trailers, and consequently restricted families with small to medium sized vehicles from owning a camper trailer. We also noticed that camper tents for motor cycles were the opposite being very small and off course only designed for a maximum of two people, and if you owned a motor cycle camper and you were able tow it behind your vehicle you still couldn’t accommodate the rest of your family or a couple of friends. We decided the market was crying out for a family sized tent that would be light and compact enough to fit on a small trailer and be towed behind either a car or motorcycle, and so we embarked on designing and manufacturing such a tent.
First we created a strengthened folding bed base and mattress that would extend into the main bedroom area. Next we reduced the size of the main bedroom area, and manufactured a large annex roof in both height and length that could be fully enclosed as a sleeping area for an additional three adults. All this must then fit onto a small bed board. Airflow was crucial as smaller tents can be hotter inside than the larger tents, so we added a rear door, aligned all three doors (inc door in annex walls) changed the style to a “U” shape making them much wider than the conventional “D” shaped doors this then allows hot air to pass through the tent. Similarly each window had to have a corresponding window to allow perfect air flow and keep the tent cool in summer. Finally we adopted all the strengthening and sewing methods used in our Adventurer tents. Two prototypes a green and a camouflage tent were both manufactured at the same time. The two prototypes then embarked on a ninety night, twenty thousand kilometre adventure around Australia being tested in all the various conditions. The testing proved an overwhelming success and production commenced.
The following photos were taken before, during, and after Kevin, Keith and their wives put the Austrack “Scouts” to the test….

Windows: All windows very fine strengthened M3 Midge mesh/Micro mesh, (not the larger holed mosquito mesh).
Utilizing Midge mesh/Micro mesh keeps out all small insects such as sand flies and midges.
Doors: All doors are zipped canvas, (two zips per door), with a zipped Midge mesh/Micro mesh door behind them.
Doors can be zipped from bottom to top which can stop small children from going inside or outside. Canvas door can be left open without concern for insects getting into the tent, and allows airflow.

Exterior travel cover 600g/sqm very heavy duty PVC, including zips and Velcro.
Off road zipped cover. Simply zip off the top half of the cover to set up the tent, and then zip back up again after folding away the tent. The bottom half of the cover is fitted into aluminium sail track/annex rail which is screwed to the bed base board, giving you a total dust and water seal protecting the tent from the elements. The front and rear of the zip has a velcro seal over it to protect it from dust getting into the teeth. The cover is also manufactured oversize to allow for the safe and sealed storage of clothes, sleeping bags etc underneath it. All too often with conventional travel covers the tents are ruined by water and dust getting up underneath the cover, and the tent is left to rot in storage till the next camping adventure. We believe this is one of the most crucial points to ensure longevity of a camper tent, and crucial if traveling on unsealed roads. The cover also includes 6 tie down straps, with sewn in strengthened buckles.
